The old saying you get what you pay for is alive and well in the roofing industry.

The majority of the time the lowest price will not include basics like treating, re-nailing and repairing roof timbers if needed or replacing the lead (they will leave the old lead in) or using the cheapest felts and batons (all new pitched roofs should have breathable felt and treated batons) the is also the detailed finish which makes your roof look good correctly doing verges, ridges and valleys

A lot of the time half way through the job they will come up with a big issue which will cost you a lot more £££££££

The reason I’m writing this blog is because we have recently been to two re-roof Jobs to put right other peoples work. On one we had to replace all the old lead they had left in they had re-tiled the roof which was originally slate. Lead work on slate roofs is totally different to lead work needed for tiles.

The other was a job on the prom was they had re-tiled the roof but hadn’t bothered to nail any of the tiles and in high winds the tiles kept coming off.   

These were jobs we originally quoted for but did not get .at D&C Roofing we give detailed quotes for every process of re-roofing covering every that needs doing.

So when getting quotes for your roof work make sure you get like for like quotes to ensure that each roofing company is quoting on the same roof?

Be wary of the low quote it could turn out to be the most expensive one

I’ve seen this many times when a slate roof has been striped and replaced with tile for some reason they leave the old lead back gutter in they must know it will leek eventually as it is not suitable for tiles......

 

 

Another common thing we see is when so called roofers have not correctly installed bonding gutters when sealing joints with adjoining properties choosing to just cement the join to save a few pounds

 

 

 

Another thing we often see is when a old flat roof has been over boarded the old roof just rots away after time coursing all sorts of problems if anyone suggests over boarding politely tell them to leave your property

Not all roofers are slaters

Not all Blackpool roofers are slaters so you really shouldn’t let a general builder have a go at slating you wouldn’t hire a pianist to play the drums would you?

Slating is a hard skill to master

I started my roofing life at the age of 15 with a team of slaters and it was nearly two years before I was even allowed to actually lay any slates

Having first to master cutting slates, setting out and battening

I had to lean all the gauges for different sized slates and different roof pitches

I had to learn how to correctly do valleys and set out eaves and toppers

I had to learn how to correctly do lead work for slates as it is totally different from tiles

The Blackpool home owner had a builder in to build a new store room but made a total mess of the slate roof

Eaves slates were three inches to short may as well not been there five inch if you include the two inch overhang into the gutter the Eave slates flush with the fascia no overhang at all

He got the batten gauge wrong no head lap on the slates at all the should be at least three inches and because this was such a flat pitch the should of been more. And the slates should be under the dry verge not on top.

Mr Pearce replied to my job post within a day of me putting it up, he was honest about the work that needed to be done and his quote was very good. His work and materials used were to the highest standard and completed the work in the time scale he said, there were no hidden extras and the final
bill was the same price as the quote. Both Dave and his team cleaned up and removed all mess created and they were very friendly. After the job was finished I asked him to look at my front bay roof as I had broken slates, he did this gladly and carried out the extra work at no extra cost. Dave responded promptly by email, came to give an estimate promptly (which was competitive compared to other quotes); did the job promptly, at the time he said he would, and to a good standard, The final bill was the same as the estimate. I contacted D&C roofing after reading reviews on here. I called them a week last Monday to come around to give me a quote and he arrived later that day. He was totally honest with me. He took several photos of the state of the roof and showed them to me. Not did just the roof need replacing but several wooden panels were also rotten and needed replacing. He quoted me there and then and later that evening I received an email with his formal quote which was exactly the same as the one he had verbally quoted. I can tell you he was very very competitive and I accepted his price straight away. He advised me he could start the following Wednesday and it would take 2 days. He arrived on the stated day at 0800 with his team and did a really great job despite several rain showers. After he had finished the area was spotless. I could not recommend a more pleasant guy as well. I have no problem in recommending D&C roofing to anyone.
